#StopUPOV

Zotero continues to be the best reference manager around — #FOSS, made by scholars for scholars. Upcoming features (now available for beta testing) include automatic relinking of #mendeley citations, much faster #googledocs integration, and support for #latex math in notes

If you don't use a reference manager yet (or if you're using a for-profit one like Mendeley or EndNote) you can always give #Zotero a whirl: it's free and doesn't lock you in:

@eliocamp @rstats @academicchatter Since today the anonimity in publication process is almost impossible to maintain (people often present papers in multiple conferences before sending to peer reviewed journals, they publish some tools in opensource...), I don't think it is shocking to propose a review on Github.

In the end a reviewer wants the paper to be as best as possible. Sending a review on Github is probably one of the most effective way to help improving a research project.

Many people point to France as an example of nuclear power's success. Not anymore.

France's #nuclear power nightmare: "safety concerns forced the closure of half of the country’s nuclear power plants...23 out of 56 were still offline due to concerns over corrosion cracks and an accumulation of pandemic-related inspection delays." @rick_n @washingtonpost #nuclear #energy

Technology is neither good nor bad, nor is it ever neutral (Kranzberg's 1st law 1986).

Les technologies préparent l’affrontement global de demain : les alliances deviennent des instruments ; les dépendances, des armes ; la puissance se transforme.

Question for experienced reviewers

@landwehr_c @jwes @politicalscience @academicchatter Chiming in late. One issue to consider is that a short positive review may be seen as "uninformative" by the editor and not weighed heavily if another reviewer is negative. This is bad, I think, but still true. It will help the author & editor if you take the trouble to write a couple of paragraphs about what is good. Sad but true.

To be clear: not everyone who wants to post an image can describe it and image descriptions will never be fully universal.

Some folks just don't know how and that's entirely valid. When you see a post with an image, if you have time and energy, look if it has a description. If it has one, ask yourself if its a good one. Does it reflect the image well? Does it include everything important? Does it go into too much h detail? Is it how you woukd describe the image to a friend in a conversation?

Looking at descriptions is a good first step in getting an idea how you could write them.

Trying things out is also an important part of a learning process, so, when you have time, try writing on for an image! Start with a simple one like an orange cat looking chill. The .ore you practice and read, the easier it will be.

Also, people on the fediverse want to help, so asking for feedback or questions or "how would you describe this?- is fine and good.

We're (mostly) all working together to make a better world and this is part of that.

Hi! I’m new here and looking to connect with #ScienceMastodon #academicmastodon 🤓
My research is on how people form #social bonds via non-verbal #body movements and sharing social #norms. Special interests in #children and #autism.
I 🧡 #interdisciplinary work and often find myself bridging social & developmental #psychology, #neuroscience, #philosophy and, when I go wild, #computerscience 😄
This is me jubilating at the #oxford #library Nice to meet you too!
